Safeway vs Shoprite in USA:
Let’s look at some differences between two USA supermarket chains, Safeway and Shoprite.
Background of Safeway
Safeway supermarket is a chain that was founded by Marion Skaggs in 1915 as a grocery store in Idaho. It has more than two thousand stores in the United States of America. It was founded particularly to offer value to the customers by keeping the costs down and the profit margins thin.
Background of ShopRite
ShopRite is a supermarket chain that was started as consumer merchandise and a retail store in 1951. It has a headquarters base in Keasbey, New Jersey. It has two hundred and thirty stores spread over New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Online shopping facility is offered by ShopRite. It is a regional brand because its presence is concentrated in the north eastern part of the country. It has grown into a big co-operative establishment that is owned by private retailers in USA. It is also one of the largest employers among the New Jersey supermarkets.
Key points for comparison
Both Safeway and ShopRite supermarkets along with several other grocery chains have been offering mobile coupons through Verizon Communications Inc. and their free service of digital coupons for its FiOS TV and wireless customers. The coupons included for ShopRite were for savings on Progresso Soups, Multigrain Cheerios and Hamburger Helper.
Safeway has its coupons distributed through Vons Coupons and its deals have included Hershey’s / Mars / Nestle snack size bags that were offered for as low as one dollar each. Despite the economy going through a rough phase at the moment, the no frill products may not be expected to go through resurgence. It is very much likely that these supermarkets will offer low premium store brands that emphasise on savings like Safeway Basic Red. These products often sell for about twenty five per cent less than the bigger brands on average. It is working for both Safeway and ShopRite as per a recent survey done on supermarkets by the Consumer Reports National Research Center (source).
