There are many aspects to a flying experience, but none as important as your seating assignment. Well Southwest Airlines is quite a “trip” when in comes to the general boarding process. The first time I flew with them, I had no idea of the “unassigned seating” process. Unless you upgrade you are given a group and number based upon when you check in. When your group is called, you will experience something like the “running of the bulls”. Sit anywhere you want but depending on when your group is called, there may be slim pickings. Sure there is a bit more choice of who you decide to sit next to (versus assigned seating) but the whole process to me was a bit unnerving. By the time the whole seating fiasco is over, you are glad to be strapped in and settled. The fares are reasonable and the amenities (if you can call them that) leave a bit to be desired but I think anyone who has never traveled with Southwest most always talk about the seating. Perhaps it is a very smart move from management to take your mind off of everything else, since this experience of getting seated is the most memorable of the trip. It’s definitely a no frills sort of transport, but sometimes the journey is more interesting than the destination.
