Jetstar

Created in 2003, Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd is a subsidiary of Qantas and is a low-budget alternative to Australia’s largest flagship carrier. With its fleet size of 70 aircrafts, it operates in the domestic as also international segment and has its base at Melbourne. Most of its planes belong to Airbus families of A320 and A330 types and Boeing 787 Dreamliner which take passengers to as many as 35 destinations.

While on the domestic route Jetstar offers a single class namely Economy with a seating ranging between 180 and 220 depending on the type of plane being used, on international circuits they offer Business and Economy classes with seating capacity being close to 300. In the Economy class, food and drinks are provided under the buy-on-board programme wherein passengers have the option of making purchases on board irrespective of whether they are travelling on a domestic or international route. There is a variation in case of Business Class wherein charges for meals, beverages and entertainment are included in the price of the ticket and allowance is also made for up to 30 kgs of extra baggage.

Entertainment on board a Jetstar plane is provided courtesy of iPads which are availed by Business Class passengers for free and by Economy Class passengers in lieu of a stipulated charge. Provision of entertainment screens in both classes is another in-flight amenity that this airline provides.

Virgin Airlines

Virgin Australia Airlines commenced operations on 31st August, 2000, and swiftly catapulted to the position of being the second largest airline after Qantas. Its fleet of 106 aircrafts comprises of Boeing and Boeing Widebody, Airbus and Embraer jets, all of which operate from three main hubs of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Overall, this airline covers as many as 50 destinations and provides its clients with an option of a low-budget carrier too.

Cabin division in Virgin Airlines planes features three classes over the domestic circuit namely Business, Premium Economy and Economy. Seating capacity varies from one plane to another wherein it is around 120 in smaller aircrafts, 175 in larger planes and ranges between 250 and 300 in larger models. Only in Embraer is the seating capacity less than 100 per aircraft. International flights feature the same division of cabin, an added advantage being provided by ‘mood lighting’ and provision of USB slot, personal workstation and reading light in all classes.

A high-point of Virgin Australia Airlines is three-course gourmet meal prepared on board by a renowned chef and served to Business Class passengers. Otherwise, passengers in all classes can choose from an array of non-alcoholic beverages, beer and wine.
