It is mainly selling exclusive and custom-branded products that are owned independently. You will find other branded names like Fit & Active and Grandessa. Aldi was established in Germany before making its presence felt in USA. It features several imported gourmet foods that are bargain-priced.

Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s was started in 1958 as a small convenience store in Maryland. It was first named as pronto Market. Its founder, Joe Trader later on changed the name of his business to his own name.

Key points for comparison
Aldi has focused on staple items like food and beverages and other essential household stuff. Many products that it stocks are its own brands. It has resulted in higher sales for each item while making Aldi’s stores smaller than other supermarkets that carry a larger variety of diverse brands. Because of low staffing at many of its locations in comparison with Trader Joe’s, Aldi’s employees get paid considerably higher than the allowed minimum wages. This makes Aldi a popular place to work for and this is unusual among the wage structures in most supermarkets.

Aldi is trying to avoid costly price tags for shoppers. It is also implementing multiple bar codes on many of its products to make the process of checking out speedier. Aldi is buying from it suppliers directly in many cases and also bargaining hard to get best prices so that the savings can be passed down to its customers. It is buying in bulk and contracting early to get the best possible prices.

Aldi does not accept credit cards as in the case of most supermarkets in the United States. It accepts only cash and debit cards. It is also accepting those public assistance debit-styled cards. In comparison, Trader Joe’s is accepting all major credit cards. This is quite a plus point for Trader Joe’s.

Trader Joe’s is also gaining popularity in stocking natural and organic foods to give tough competition to Aldi. Trader Joe’s has also claimed in its advertisements that it is curbing genetically modified ingredients in foods when selecting its supplies. The only handicap with Trader Joe’s is that it does not offer online shopping and deliver facilities.
