Let’s look at some differences between the two supermarket chains, Aldi and Safeway in USA.
Aldi
The Aldi chain of supermarkets was started by the Albrecht brothers in Germany. They began as discount stores. In the United States of America, Aldi has about one thousand three hundred stores that can be found in thirty two states.
Safeway
This is also a supermarket chain in the United States of America. It was started as a small grocery store in 1915 by Marion Skaggs in American Falls, Idaho. It is now owned by Cerberus Capital Management and there are two thousand two hundred stores in the country. Skaggs had started the grocery with a concept of buying something while driving on the Safeway. It did not offer credit; it was a cash and carry unit. As per Skaggs, it was a safe way to purchase as a family could get into bad debts through its grocery bills and this was particularly true during the days of the Great Depression when many families could not repay their debts.
Key points for comparison
How is Aldi different from the other stores? It is doing things differently in terms of shopping carts to checkout processes. Its stores have energy saving features to give its customers a possibility of enjoying very low prices at the stores. For its carts, it is keeping them at a convenient place for customers to place a quarter in a slot, take the trolley, shop around and return it back to the place to snap the quarter back from the slot. It is not accepting credit cards because it does not want add on the processing fees to the cost of products. This is the reason why it is accepting only cash and debit cards so hat it can continue to keep the prices low.
Recently, a shopping survey was conducted by the Market Force Information. It wanted the shoppers to rate several grocery stores like Aldi, Kroger, Safeway and Walmart. Most of the shoppers made it clear during the survey that their top most priority was convenient locations. The next popular reason for preferring a particular supermarket was its low prices. The next factor was sales and promotions, followed by cleanliness and a variety in the selection of merchandise.
Aldi got the highest rating in this survey for its low prices. It did not fare well in comparison with Safeway for variety in merchandise shopping and food products. Shoppers preferred Safeway for its store atmosphere but gave the nod to Aldi for its natural or organic products.
