[addtoany]The effectiveness of tocotrienols on hair loss is currently under investigation.
The potential benefits as well as harms are being studied so it is strongly recommended to discuss your individual health and suitability to start a supplement with your doctor.
The following does not substitute in any way for medical advice by a qualified health professional.
Tocotrienols are members of the Vitamin E group of compounds. Vitamin E is a crucial nutrient in the human body.
Among many other suggested health benefits, it has been suggested that their antioxidant properties may have some effect on slowing down alopecia (hair loss).
In the human body, the process of oxidation can create unstable chemicals called free radicals. If these free radical chemicals contribute to hair loss, antioxidants like tocotrienols can neutralise them and potentially render them harmless.
A study (published in the Tropical Life Sciences Research journal from Malaysia in 2010) was conducted to assess the effect of tocotrienol supplements on hair growth in a small group of volunteers suffering from hair loss.
It found that the group using tocotrienol supplements over eight months had increased hair number although there was no statistical difference in the weight of hairs.
There are several things we must be aware of when assessing the results of this study. The sample size was very small, the potential for measurement bias was not excluded and it was the only study of its kind I came across.
To put this into perspective, studies assessing the benefits and potential harms for a blood pressure medication, let’s say, would be based on multiple studies thousands of times larger than this.
Nonetheless, this compound shows great promise for slowing down hair loss as well as leading to hair regrowth and the jury is out. More studies and evidence is needed to further assess.
As with any supplement, if you do plan to give it a go, ensure you buy it from reputable sellers and discuss with a medical professional regarding possible risks before starting. Also consider the cost as long term intake for hair loss is needed and may be very expensive.
