While it is the flagship carrier of the economic hub that is Singapore, globally it ranks amongst the first 15 in terms of revenue and first 10 as regards number of passengers ferried from one point to another. Having been launched in 1947, this airline is 68 years old and continues to fly to as many as 64 destinations around the world from its main hub, Changi Airport.
From the day of its inception, Singapore Airlines has had two owners, namely Temasek Holdings which owns the majority 56% of shares and the Singapore Government which participates via its financial ministry. Particularly enduring about this airline is its logo and it is believed to have been inspired by silver kris, a species which occupies a place of prominence in myth as also folklore associated with the region’s culture. Apart from minor tweaks given to the bird in 1987, the logo has retained its basic shape and has come to be synonymous with the airline. That said, the airline has had its share of controversies pertaining to the tension between the pilots and the management as also budget and service.
Its primary depot being Singapore, the airline operates on 62 routes in 35 countries spread over six continents and also maintains a subsidiary named SilkAir to provide connectivity to regional and secondary sectors. In addition to boasting of a dominant status in its native region, Singapore Airlines enjoys plenty of traffic on the Australian sector too, thus creating for itself an important niche in the so-called ‘Kangaroo Route’. Through SilkAir, Singapore Airlines signed an agreement with Thailand and operates frequent flights in the Bangkok-Dubai sector.
As of 30th June, 2015, the fleet of Singapore Airlines is comprised of 107 aircrafts all of which are of three types namely Airbus A330 and A380 and the Boeing 777. Each of these aircrafts is divided into five classes namely suite, first, business, premium economy and economy. While the airline is insistent on its policy to maintain a young fleet, cabin overhauls are common with a major overhaul having taken place in 2006 for the first time. In 2013, the management entered into collaboration with two designing firms with the intention of upgrading cabin outlook and service for three main classes – first, business and economy.
Amongst the various classes, suite is the epitome of luxury with private compartments, leather upholstery, wide armrests and wall mounted television. Then there is the first class that features seats which can be transformed into beds followed by the business class that consists of the concept of ‘SpaceBed’ seats. In-flight entertainment is offered through KrisWorld and is inclusive of movies, television programs, music, gaming and USB port.
Frequent Flyer program offered by Singapore Airlines also comprises of four layers amongst which the most basic is known as KrisFlyer. Next is Elite Sliver and Elite Gold both of which correspond to Star Alliance’s Silver and Gold tiers respectively. Also available is PPS Club wherein PPS is an acronym for Priority Passenger Service and this is inclusive of several privileges.
Other than a few sporadic incidents, Singapore Airlines enjoys a good reputation and is the preferred choice of many air travellers.
