What are BSB numbers of banks in Australia?
In Australia, each individual bank and branch can be identified using what is called the BSB code. BSB stands for the “Bank-State-Branch” code. It is a six digit numerical code that is uniform and used to identify every individual branch of a financial institution in Australia.

Just like your account number identifies you, the BSB number identifies your bank branch.

Australian Paper Clearing System (APCS) and Bulk Electronic Clearing System (BECS) payment systems use BSB codes. They are frequently used in electronic and internet banking.

Let’s say you wanted to split a bill in the restaurant and wanted to send money to a friend. To make the money transfer in your internet banking app, the BSB Number is used together with the first and last name and bank account number of the recipient.

For international money transfers to Australia, a SWIFT code must be used along with a BSB Number and Account Number.

In Australia, the Australian BSB Numbers consists of three parts and six digits with a dash separating the code in half.

AAB-CCC

The initial two digits (AA) specify the financial institution e.g. ANZ
The next part of the BSB is the third digit (B) which specifies the state where the branch is located
The 4th, 5th and 6th digits (CCC) specify the unique branch location
