Comparing the two Galaxy S6 phones

The Samsung Galaxy S6 phones are out and causing a lot of excitement as they look to face up to competition from Apple’s iPhone 6, Google Nexus 6 and HTC.

Unlike previous releases of the Galaxy phones, Korean maker Samsung has decided to offer two different versions of the latest instalment in the successful series, the standard Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. I guess we can consider the Edge as a slight upgrade to the standard version.

But what are the exact differences between these two phones?

Screen shape

This one is the main and quite straightforward difference between the two. The Edge gives the Galaxy S6 a stylish, novel and pretty look.

The Edge section of the screen on the S6 Edge phone includes curved section of the screen on the side of the phone that is used for a secondary display that the standard version does not have.

Samsung is offering cool features such as “Information Stream,” “Night Clock,” “Edge Lighting,” and “People Edge”. This is an upgrade on what is already available on the Note Edge.

The secondary display is quite a sweet addition and I can imagine it could really come in handy. Also, the potential for custom designed apps to fit the screen could be great.

Dimensions:

On the dimensions front, there are some minimal differences between size and weight of the two handsets.
Galaxy S6: 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm (5.64 x 2.77 x 0.27 in) and 138 grams
Galaxy S6 Edge: 142.1 x 70.1 x 7mm (5.59 x 2.76 x 0.27in) and 132 grams

Battery:

Due to the larger display on the Edge, it includes a slightly larger battery
Galaxy S6: 2550mAh
Galaxy S6 Edge: 2600mAh

Battery life is slightly disappointing, while not bad, somewhat worse than the Galaxy S5

Colours:

Both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be available in several colours including White Pearl, Black Sapphire and Gold Platinum options, while the special Blue Topaz will be for the Galaxy S6 and Green Emerald for the S6 Edge.

Price:

Depending on your region and supplier, the Edge commands a slightly higher price. Somewhere in the vicinity of a couple of hundreds dollars.

Verdict:

The curved edge is appealing in its own right. It is sexy and stylish and appears for the first time in a Galaxy phone. As there is a bit of a price difference between the two models, cost will be a major factor when deciding between the two.
