Qantas, the flagship airline of Australia has been in operation since 1921 and hence ranks third in the list of oldest operating airlines in the world. Also referred to as ‘The Flying Kangaroo’, its fleet comprises of 119 aircrafts, which are a mix of Airbus and Boeing types and transport passengers to 42 destinations. It is the proud owner of several subsidiaries and has Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney as its primary hubs and Adelaide, Perth and Dubai as its secondary hubs. Qantas also holds the distinction of being OneWorld Alliance member.
Cabins in Qantas are segregated into four classes namely First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy and passengers travelling by international flights have the option of availing International Business. First Class offers several unique features like provision of rotational seats, USB ports and access to the business lounge on the upper deck. Amenities are also inclusive of Qantas Frequent-flyer programme and Qantas Club wherein access to several airport lounges the world over is granted on the basis of membership alone. In-flight entertainment system, referred to as On:Q, includes several systems like videos, movies, streaming and an in-flight magazine named ‘Qantas – The Australian Way’, all of which are provided on different planes individually or as a package.
Germany-based Lufthansa, the official flagship airline of its country, was established circa 1955, almost three decades after Qantas. Lufthansa is a combination of two words, namely ‘Luft’ the German word for air and ‘hansa’, the Latin word for guild. Owing to possessing multiple subsidiaries, it boasts of a fleet size of more than 600 aircrafts, all of which take passengers to as many as 215 destinations spanning the four continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. From its head-quarters in Cologne, two main hubs for this airline are Frankfurt and Munich while Dusseldorf serves as a base for its local operations conducted under the banner of Germanwings.
Passengers opting for Lufthansa can choose between First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy wherein each comes with its share of amenities. Its frequent flyer programme is named as Miles & More and it is affiliated to lounges namely First Class, Senator and Business Lounges. First Class tickets are also inclusive of a bed and an aisle seat while meals are provided on demand basis. Passengers travelling by this class also have dedicated check-in counters lounges and terminals in most airports around the world. Business and Premium Economy Classes feature seat-back entertainment screens while in the Economy Class there is provision of AVOD screen.
