Lufthansa vs Emirates

These two large international carriers are major competitors in the intercontinental flight market. The German giant Lufthansa is an established, traditional airline with many years of stable growth behind them. On the other hand, Emirates are quickly becoming one of the biggest and most successful airlines in the world.

Lufthansa

When it was founded in 1953 and finally took off on 1955, no-one could have imagined that Lufthansa, the German Airline, would one day acquire the status of being the largest in Europe. Presently, this airline covers 18 domestic and 197 international routes which are spread over 78 countries and encompass the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and the two Americas. Although the airline head-quarters are in Cologne, its main operation hub is Frankfurt Airport followed by Munich and the third being Dusseldorf wherein duties are transferred to Germanwings.

Lufthansa boasts of a fleet of more than 280 aircrafts wherein each of its planes is named after a German city or a town depending on its make, size and flying path. The only exception to this rule occurred in 2010 when two of its planes were named after Canadian cities Halifax and Gander to acknowledge the hospitality extended by the mentioned cities to passengers during the 9/11 attacks. Travellers have the option of choosing between First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy and amenities provided vary as per the requisites of the chosen class. Food and drinks are served to passengers in all classes, although what might vary is the degree of customization and space available during travel.

Emirates

Emirates, one of the flag carriers of United Arab Emirates, ranks seventh in the list of largest global airlines and is regarded as an epitome of aviation industry in aspects like service, growth and profitability. This airline commenced operations on 25th October, 1985, and presently operates a fleet of 221 aircrafts flying to 142 destinations the world over.

With Dubai as its main hub, Emirates features more than 3000 flights to different destinations spanning over six continents, the list of destinations being extended every year. In ever plane, the cabin is divided into three categories namely first class, business class and economy class wherein the first class is the most luxurious courtesy of offering a fully equipped suite and sleeper seating. Business and Economy classes offer their own amenities and in-flight entertainment in all three classes is of three types namely ICE, ICE Digital Widescreen and Emirates TV & Radio.

Emirates Flight Catering looks after the food and beverage requirements and in addition to the usual menu, it offers scope of customization based on factors like age, religion, dietary restrictions and so on if informed 24 hours prior to the departure of the flight.

While both are international airlines, Lufthansa serves more than 215 destinations while Emirates serves more than 142 destinations. Unlike Emirates, Lufthansa does not serve Australia. On the other side unlike Lufthansa, Emirates does not serve South America. Lufthansa has been into business over 11 years whereas Emirates is flying since over 6 years.

My vote in this comparison is for Lufthansa, as it is truly German. The business and economy on Lufthansa is much better though Emirates’ First is better. Most of Emirates lounges are better, though some Lufthansa lounges are equally good or better. However Lufthansa has more flight more connectivity and a larger time table. If one wishes to travel business or economy, go for Lufthansa. Otherwise Emirates for First.
