Jetstar

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd is a low-budget subsidiary of Qantas that was created to prevent Virgin, a major competitor, from capturing the budget-traveller market. Founded in 2003, Jetstar operates mostly in the domestic segment with a few flights serving the international sector too. As of March, 2015, Jetstar fleet comprised of 70 aircrafts, the break-up being 53 Airbus A320, six Airbus A321, three Airbus A330-200 and eight Boeing 787-8.

Travellers opting to fly Jetstar can choose between Business and Economy class. A Business Class ticket is luxury personified wherein the seats are larger and charges are inclusive of meals, beverages and in-flight entertainment, not to mention access to Qantas Club Lounge and adding of frequent-flyer points. In comparison, Economy Class entails either making a prior purchase of meals while booking tickets or buying them on-board.

Jetstar became the first airline to offer iPad as part of its in-flight entertainment to travellers wherein Business Class passengers could avail it free and those in the Economy Class could do so in lieu of a fee.

Tigerair

Like Jetstar, Tigerair Australia (or Tiger as it is commonly known) is a low-budget alternative of Virgin Australia, a competitor of Qantas and hence a fierce competitor of Jetstar. Aircrafts under this franchise have a seating of 180, all of which are located in the same class, namely Economy. During the flight, food and beverages can be purchased on-board through a programme named ‘Tiger Bites’ and there is also a magazine, namely Tiger Tales, which is offered free of charge.

As a low-budget airline, Tigerair has flights to 17 destinations and a total fleet of 13 aircrafts which are based in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. Even though it is smaller in size than Jetstar, Tigerair ranks well in terms of customer satisfaction, especially after having re-opened after having been grounded by CASA in 2011. Although the grounding order caused it to close down its bases at Adelaide and Avalon, it enabled the airline to improve its service standards and quickly regain its position by its competitors’ side.

Comparing Tigerair vs Jetstar, which is better?

Because Tigerair and Jetstar are both low-budget airlines which come up with schemes frequently in a bid to expand their customer base, comparing discounts and packages offered by them prior to making bookings is definitely recommended.
