This chain of supermarkets began in 1977 with a store set up by Bill Moran in Cahokia in Illinois. It has now become one of the largest grocery chains in the country. Key points for comparison
Aldi has carried over some of its German supermarket practices into USA. Few examples are the metal gate systems and the turnstiles at the time of exit for customers when they are checking out. Another practice is of charging the customers for the shopping carrier bags. Aldi also does not accept credit cards. It accepts only cash and debit cards. Within a span of few years, Aldi expanded the locations of its stores from Illinois to Missouri.

Save-A-Lot has brought the concept of discount groceries to few selected neighborhoods across USA in both the urban and the rural areas. This supermarket chain has been commended for its assortment of food products offered in its shops. It serves more than four million customers every week across the country. Its customers are quite pleased with its bargains on its exclusive brands that cover a range of both food and household items.

In comparison with Aldi, the stores of Save-a-Lot are much smaller and they feature concentrated products than the traditional supermarkets. They display the items in cardboard cartons. Save-A-Lot believes in a limited assortment display in the product selection and it gives them a twenty per cent price advantage over traditional supermarkets like Aldi.
