Food Lion
Food Lion grocery store was established by Wilson Smith, Brown Ketner and Ralph Ketner in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1957. It is a Belgian grocery and supermarket chain. Food Lion operates one thousand one hundred supermarkets in sixteen states. It has a workforce of forty eight thousand employees supporting its stores. Food Lion is the largest subsidiary of the Delhaize Group who is a food retailer from Belgium. It has been operating since 1867 and has its presence in six other countries besides the United States of America.
One of the recent developments by the Delhaize Group has been the sale of sixty six of its Bottom Dollars Food Stores to Aldi Inc.

Aldi has a stronger marketing campaign in comparison with Food Lion stores. It has also promoted its smart phone application so that shoppers can enjoy their low prices and have information about Aldi stores at their fingertips. Its latest offers can now be accessed at the push of few buttons. Its apps are compatible with iPhones, iPod Touch and all Android devices. Some of the features of this app include the updates made by Aldi on the special buys every week. The app also allows the users to check out the current price reductions on the items they are seeking. The users can also make their individual shopping lists by means of a tool provided in the app. There is a GPS-enabled device in the app that can be used as a tool to locate an Aldi store nearest to the users’ location. They can get directions, maps, address and the operating hours of the store.
A comparison was done between a basket made up of twenty nine selected items between Aldi and Food Lion. The prices at Food Lion are appreciated by the shoppers but hey find the food variety less at these stores. The quality of food products offered by Aldi is superior. It promotes a great deal of organic foods such as strawberries and wheat tortillas.
