Woolworths or Aldi
Let’s look at some differences between the two Australian supermarket giants, Woolworths and ALDI.

Woolworths
Woolworths started in Australia with its first basement store in 1924 at Pitt Street in Sydney. It has grown into a household name today. Its presence is found in almost every metropolitan centre in Australia and New Zealand. Woolworths started operating its fresh food stores about six decades ago after the developments took place in refrigeration technology and storage and transport systems got revolutionized. Woolworths is celebrating its 91st year in retail business.

ALDI
ALDI was founded by the Albrecht Brothers, Karl and Theo in Germany in 1946. The name ALDI stands as a shortened form for Albrecht Diskont Stores. Today, it has 367 stores across Australia and controls about fifteen per cent of the supermarket share in this part of the world.

Comparison of ALDI and Woolworths
Woolworths still holds the weight in supermarket business in Australia with its share close to forty per cent in the industry but on a slight decline of late. In comparison, ALDI holds a place after Woolworths and Coles. It also finds IGA competing closely for the strong hold on the grocery business.

ALDI stores are smaller when compared with Woolworths. Shoppers may not find an attractive vegetable or fresh fruits section as they will find at Woolworths. The rows of cans and biscuits are prominent at ALDI stores. It does not carry all the major brands as is done by Woolworths. The chunky soups and beans are examples of the display dominance with brands like Heinz, Maggi and Patak.

The savings offered by the ALDI stores are impressive. It is running a campaign currently that shows a basket which offers savings of thirty two per cent when compared with Woolworths (Source). In the luxury section, ALDI stores boast a good range of alcohol products, particularly the red wines. For example, you may find a Carte Carista Chianti Classico Red Wine bottle for $9.99 for 750 ml. at ALI’s while you will not get this brand at Woolworths, though you may finer various brand packages at 3 bottles for $27.00 at Woolworths.

The drawbacks at ALDI are that you have to give a coin deposit for the trolleys and you will not find many baskets for picking up fewer things at a lot of ALDI stores. You have to depend on a trolley at ALDI. When you pay by a credit card at ALDI, you have to pay a small surcharge. You also do not have an online shopping facility for all items at ALDI as you may find at Woolworths. You can buy liquor online at ALDI. Its website, however, provides a shopping list tool that helps shoppers get organized ahead of shopping and planning their budget.
