Coles vs IGA:

Let’s explore Coles and IGA, two established supermarket chains in Australia.

Background of the supermarkets

Coles
It is a supermarket chain in Australia that is under the ownership of Wesfarmers. It was founded in Victoria in the year 1914. For ninety one years, Coles has been regarded highly as part of the Australian shopping experience. It manages 741 stores across Australia. It offers online shopping facility.

Coles offers a large range of brands and quality products at, as Coles claims, affordable prices. The products range from stylish clothing to pantry fillers and they will offer variety as well as good value. Coles also runs a very informative blog for its shoppers. Coles has its own brand that offers a range of products, ranging from chocolate chip cookies to peanut butter and cheddar cheese.

Delivery Options – The first delivery is offered free with coupon codes. Subsequently, free delivery is offered on orders that are above $100 when they are paid with a MasterCard issued by Coles. This offer excludes tobacco products.

IGA
IGA is a supermarket chain in Australia. It represents the Independent Grocers of Australia. It is Australia’s answer to the global Independent Grocers Association. There are more than 1,400 stores of IGA in Australia. Its Supa IGA stores stock a full product range and the standard IGA stores are medium-sized supermarkets. Between the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales alone, there are over 150 Supa IGA and IGA stores.

The main “generic” brand for IGA stores is Black and Gold. This is a general brand for everyday groceries. It is also sold in Welcome Mart and Food Works stores throughout the country. Like the major supermarket groups in Australia, it offers online shopping options.

Delivery Options – You can expect deliveries from Mondays to Fridays. They do not deliver on weekends. Same day deliveries are available only for all online orders that are placed by 0700 hours. Deliveries are charged at 6% of the shopping invoice to a maximum of $15 per each order.

Comparing Price and Value

IGA conducted its own price survey and showed that its prices are considered as 15% higher than its competitor, Coles. However, there are claims that their prices match Coles on some of the forty one items that were selected for the survey.
