Coles

Coles has been offering the facility and convenience of online shopping to Australians since 1999 as a prominent supermarket chain.

Coles is one of the two major supermarket brands in Australia along with Woolworths.

It can be hard to find time to physically go to a supermarket these days. Coles is one of the few chains that delivers groceries all across Australia so that their customers have more time on their hands to do other things. This is one the major advantages that Coles has versus SPAR as SPAR does not offer delivery options directly to its shoppers in many areas.

More Australians are shopping online today with chains that have a vast range of fresh food and groceries with additional catalogues and exclusive specials on their promotional online. Coles has optimised its online channels including their website. It is quite easy to login to Coles’ website with using your email address and creation of a unique password. It is a secure process and Coles seems to be committed to safeguarding your privacy.

 

SPAR

SPAR in Dutch means ‘Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig’ and translated to “We all benefit from joint co-operation”.

It has opened more than twelve thousand stores across thirty five countries. SPAR is regarded as one of the most innovative retailers in the world. SPAR Australia Limited was formed in December 2002 under the title of Australian Retail Logistix Limited.

It offers online shopping and has a whole section devoted to healthy living lifestyle on its website. It operates a few types of retail formats – from neighbourhood supermarkets to smaller SPAR express or convenience stores. In Australia, the majority of the focus is geared towards the smaller convenience shops.

SPAR Australia also offers an incentive programme for retailers with a focus on standards and customer service.

 

Comparing prices between SPAR and Coles

In the beginning of April of 2023, we did a limited random sample size price comparison between Coles and SPAR. We selected a small basket of every day products and looked at the price difference.

Which is better, Coles or SPAR?

As you can see, based on our small and limited sample basket size, we found that Coles had slightly better prices than SPAR on this day. We also found the selection size and breadth of specials was better at Coles than at SPAR. Coles also has more stores in Australia and a larger delivery network. The convenience of some smaller SPAR stores in your area may be a bonus for SPAR.
